Numeracy and literacy in early primary

We go inside the classroom to discover how numeracy and literacy are taught in the early primary years.

Top 5 Tips

1. There are so many ways you can support your child’s learning at home. Read to (and with) your child as much as possible. Talk about the story and what they see in the pictures.

2. Build numbers into everyday life. Ask your child to set the table with 5 knives and 5 forks, then ask them how many does 5 plus 5 equal?

3. Work with them to write and put labels on special things – like the door to their room or their toy box.

4. Display their work. Put it on the fridge. Be proud of it. Share it with others.

5. Put magnetic letters on the fridge and ask your child what words they can make with the letters.
