Changing the colour of a flower

A transformation using transpiration!

What you’ll need:

– White flowers

– Jars

– Food colouring

– Scissors

– Water

Instructions:

1. Pour water into the jars.

2. Add food colouring to the water and mix well.

3. Put your flowers in the coloured water. If you want your flower to have two colours, cut the stem in half and put half of the stem in a different colour.

4. Leave flowers in a well-it room for 4-6 hours and see what happens!

What’s the science?

Water evaporates out of the petals and is replaced by the coloured water that is drawn up the stem of the flowers. This process is called transpiration.

Adult supervision advised.
